Schanzenviertel street art & murals

Schanzenviertel???

--> We are in Hamburg!

The "Schanzenviertel" or short: "Schanze" [engl.: entrenchment] is a Hamburg district traditionally embracing a multicultural, alternative lifestyle.

Welcome...

The heart of Schanzenviertel are the streets and places called
Schulterblatt, Schanzenstraße, Susannenstraße, Bartelsstraße, Sternschanze station and Sternschanzen park

These are the locations I found the majority of the streetart objects and murals.

Hamburg street roes...

Hi there! Howzit?

--> self portrait...  ;-)

Rote Flora

The Rote Flora is a former theatre in the Sternschanze neighbourhood in Hamburg. It has been squatted since November 1989 in response to a decision to turn it into a musical theatre.

Schanzenviertel Hamburg - neighborhood unplugged

10.6 millions of overnight guests and additionally 111 millions of daily visitors Hamburg had in 2012.
And many of them visited some of the hotspots St. Pauli, St. Georg or Schanzenviertel where they hope to find some kind of the original, immoral, nonconformist and at the same time very trendy Hamburg.

So do I.

Whenever I visit Hamburg, Germany's cosmopolitan capital in the north of Germany,
I like to stroll through the strees of Ottensen, St. Pauli or the "Schanzenviertel".

On the one hand I find tons of photo motifs and scenes, on the other hand it's a pleasure to explore the small, unique and independent little shops, restaurants and coffee bars.

Here's one on the unique fashion shops where I bought a t-shirt:

Elternhaus - literally translated into "family home" - but be warned - it's not the shop and the clothes you might expect because of its name ... ;-)

Outside the shop the street looks like this...

...but these items already belong to the neighbor shop, where they sell a hodgepodge of...???

...curiosities and bits and pieces!
You can even buy the model of Munich's Frauenkirche / Church of Our Lady there! ;-))

?????????????????????????????????
Or artworks of international renown..!
?????????????????????????????????

But what I like most as a photographer is the street art and the graffiti...

Hamburg's borough called Schanzenviertel (literally translated into: entrenchment quarter) is not an official part of the city. It's the name of an older housing area of the districts of Altona, Mitte, Eimsbüttel, St. Pauli and Rotherbaum.

Formerly known as a "problem neighborhood", the Schanzenviertel nowadays is more and more a hip and trendy neighbourhood and a cultural as well as subcultural heart of Hamburg.

I hope you liked my stroll "in the neighborhood" of Hamburg's Schanzenviertel,
although it's not the idyllic world many of you display in your blog posts.
It's neighborhood "unplugged" like you find it in many cities of our beautiful and interesting planet.

Dockland at Hamburg port

This futuristic office block in the shape of a parallelogram is known as Dockland and hangs out 40 metres above the Elbe river at Hamburg port like some ship’s bow.

There is a public viewing platform on the roof of the Dockland building, reached by a flight of steps. The effort of climbing about 140 steps is rewarded by a fine view across the Elbe and the port.

By screwing the telephoto lens on my camera body, I was able to get a little closer to the ships in the dry docks...

...this beauty is the MS Europa, a 5-stars-plus luxury cruiser. the flagship of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises.
She was in the dry dock for several days for comprehensive modernisation work.

In the background you can see the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the new concert hall under construction in the HafenCity quarter of Hamburg, Germany.

The "Enquest Producer" is being overhauled by the traditional shipyard company Blohm + Voss for 75 million Euros in Hamburg. Originally built in 1983 as an oil tanker, this 248m ship’s new tasks will be extracting of oil and gas, storing and loading onto a second tanker. She is a F.P.S.O. "Floating Production Storgage and Offloading". The ship is planned to leave the dock in mid-2014.

Hamburg is always worth visiting.
In my humble opinion the most interesting and international city in Germany.

Where else can you watch several of the most impressive ocean liners like this 290m container vessel during your afternoon stroll???

Harbour tugs at rest.

Hamburg - I love you... ;-)

☠ skull & crossbones football club

Non-established since 1910

 - - -   "St. Pauli is the only choice"   - - -

Have you ever been to Hamburg, the great capital of Germany's north?
And have you ever been to one of Hamburgs most famous boroughs - Sankt Pauli?
St. Pauli contains a world famous red light district around the street Reeperbahn.
But of course much more than this.

During a stroll through Sankt Pauli we came close to the  Millerntor stadium, the headquarters of this famous German football club, also known as "Kult".

The club is widely recognised for its unique culture and has a large popular following as one of the country's "Kult" clubs.
