springtime is purple

Our German winter isn't finally through, but it definitely made a break last week with a lot of sunshine and temperatures up to 18°C... ;-)

But our nature seems to be fed up with wintertide, especially the crocuses can't abstain from coming to light.

In the spa gardens of our hometown we've a sea of purple gems currently...

...composed of tens of thousands of shining floral stars.

For next week the weathermen promised us to get cold temperatures and snow showers again, but more or less the winter is on its last lap.

So let's enjoy our sea of crocuses...

...as long as their blossoms cheer our eyes with their marvelous colours.

Sea of Purple

Island of Bornholm, Denmark,
end of May / beginning of June 2012.

Have you ever seen such a "Sea of Purple",
such a huge field of flowering chives???

That's a true eyecatcher, isn't it?

The photos I took are from two different chive fields at two different areas on the Danish island Bornholm, in the middle of the Baltic Sea. Obviously the farmers cultivate the millions of  chive plants to reap their seeds - to sell them on to nurseries / market gardens all over the world.

So whenever you spice up your salat or dish with chopped chives, you have a good chance that the seeds of your Allium schoenoprasum plant are from one of these fields... ;-)

Typical pale purple colour of  the star-shaped flower with six petals of a chive plant, producing a dense inflorescence of 10 - 30 flowers together. Before opening, the inflorescence is surrounded by a papery bract.
